I am leaving ByteDance ๐ญ Because they hate me. Thatโs why.
Hereโs everything I did to deserve it:
Helping 300+ internal users get answers from their data.
Apparently, โlet me ask an engineerโ needed some competition.
Less time to grab coffee while waiting.
Deeply inconsiderate of me.
I may have taken โdo more with lessโ too literally.
Sorry to whoever sets next quarterโs targets.
Fewer opportunities to bond over repetitive reporting.
A devastating loss for team-building.
Tool allowlists. SQL checks.
Even the AI had to learn that confidence is not permission.
โThis is difficultโ became โHere are the alternatives and trade-offs.โ
Now there are more decisions to make. Youโre welcome.
Turns out coffee is not a substitute for sleep.
A disappointing architectural limitation.
Because my three-month internship is ending.
Thatโs the actual reason. Nobody hates me. ๐
Jokes aside, these three months challenged meโand gave me so much to be grateful for.
Real users. Real responsibility. And people willing to help me become a better engineer.
To everyone who answered my questions, challenged my assumptions, and supported my work: thank you.
My biggest takeaway? Take your work seriously. Take your health seriously, too. Neither requires sacrificing the other.
The internship ends. The learning doesnโt.
