If you can’t find a job, BUILD YOUR GITHUB PLEASE!

We spend hours writing code, debugging, and building projects. But how much attention do we give to the page that introduces all that work?

My goal for my GitHub profile is simple: make it easy to understand who I am, what I build, and what I’m interested in.

Here are a few ideas for making yours look better—without turning it into a wall of badges:

1️⃣ Start with a profile README.
Create a public repository with the same name as your GitHub username, then add a nonempty README.md at the root. GitHub will display it on your profile.
For me, that’s JiajunWang23/JiajunWang23. Think of it as the homepage for your work. (GitHub Docs)

2️⃣ Introduce yourself—not just your tech stack.
“Python, Java, C++, AWS” tells people which tools you use. I’d rather also explain what I use them to build.
On my profile, I highlight my Statistics + CS background at UIUC, my experiences at AWS and ByteDance, and my interests in backend systems, cloud infrastructure, and LLM applications.
Give your skills some context.

3️⃣ Make the layout easy to scan.
My design rule: clear headings, short paragraphs, consistent spacing, and a few purposeful emojis.
A simple structure to try:
About Me → Selected Projects → Skills → Contact
Badges and animations can add personality, but I’d keep them secondary to the work. The goal is a profile someone can navigate—not a dashboard they have to decode.

4️⃣ Put your strongest work within reach.
GitHub lets you pin up to six repositories and gists combined. Choose the work you’d most like someone to explore. (GitHub Docs)
For each featured project, I’d aim to include a clear description, a screenshot or demo, setup instructions, and the problem it solves. Add a result you can support—not just a list of frameworks.

And don’t make people hunt for your portfolio or contact information.
A prettier profile won’t replace strong engineering. But I want mine to make that engineering easier to discover.
